The Entire Month of April, and Some of May in a Few Paragraphs

This is the first time in a while that I have actually had the time to sit down and write something down for this blog. Since the last time I wrote, tons of things have happened, so I have much to inform you about. I'm not quite sure where I left, off but I think it was during spring break (was it really that long ago??). Well, we made it home safe, as is probably evident by now. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit to Washington DC for the second time. Sometime soon, I have to post some pictures. For some reason, my laptop doesn't recognize SD cards, which is the reason why I haven't posted any yet. Also, I just haven't had any time. This past month or so in school has been very hectic - most of which has Honors English to blame. One week after getting back from spring break, I had to turn in my multigenre project about Dorothy Parker, which took up that entire weekend. The next two weekends, I was frantically trying to finish my Portfolio for the same class. Yes, you read that right, two major projects due within two weeks of each other. Trust me, it was a nightmare. My reflection letter alone was twenty-one pages, double-spaced (unfortunately, some punk managed to beat that length with twenty-three pages - I think he was just trying to best me at something), and the entire portfolio weighs about a ton. While I didn't have to pull an all-nighter the Sunday/Monday before it was due, I did stay up pretty late and almost ran out of yellow ink in my printer - while printing colored pictures! My theme was artwork through the years, so I (and when I say I, I really mean my dad...) had to scan the pictures that were small enough and take pictures of those that were too large. I think what took me so long was just printing everything out and stuffing them in sheet protectors, which I sort of ran out of. What happened was that we ran out of one type of sheet protectors, so my parents bout some new ones, but they were a different brand, and I didn't want two different types of sheet protectors in my portfolio, so I had to raid all the Science Olympiad binders, as well as my sister's binder of colleges. That in itself probably made the process twice as long as it would have been.
Speaking of Science Olympiad, the Saturday before my portfolio was due, we competed in the state competition, which takes place at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Though I did have to wake up early, and the entire day was time I could have spent working on my portfolio, I did manage to enjoy myself - even if I didn't know where I was walking half the time. The room where we usually had our team room was under construction this time, so we had a new one in a different building, which may have contributed to my lack of sense of direction. For moral/actual support, my Aunt "Rose" and "oldest" uncle (if you remember correctly, that is what he said he wanted to be called when they came up last summer) came up here for the weekend, after many false claims in the past that they would come up for the state competition. Like always, it was nice to see them again, though, if you blinked, you would have missed their entire visit. At the end of the day, we went to the awards ceremony, where I didn't even pretend to listen to the guest speaker's speech about "what science is" - like we didn't know already. Instead, along with my friend, looked at random facts on his Ipod. Some of them I knew, but most of them I didn't. Unfortunately, when we finally got to the awards, I didn't win any. Our team did get three medals, even one first place - which didn't really help us because two of the three didn't count towards our team score (they were trial events). Overall, our team placed 16th out of 48, and in my events, I got 26th in anatomy (even though I thought that that was the easiest event), 14th in Ecology, 13th in Optics (so I guess our laser shoot, where we got right on the target, did balance out our horrible test scores...), and 23rd in Sounds of Music. Can I have a round of applause??
On another note, last month, our school hosted students from France for two weeks, which was pretty cool - though it did set us back majorly and forced us to now play catch up. Also, this Friday, my Honors English class is having a 1920's party as the end of our Great Gatsby unit, so I get to dress up like a person from that era. I don't have a flapper outfit, but I think I will manage. On a sadder note, these past few weeks have been a bad for the dogs in my extended family. Two weeks ago, my uncle got in a car accident and his dogs jumped out; one of them got hit by a car a mile up the road. He is recovering, but it was a rough time when we first heard the news. Then, the very next week my cousin's dogs (two fox terrier-chihuahuas) both got killed by some neighbor's pit bulls. It was a very sad business, something that was completely unexpected. In fact, when we first got the news, we thought it had to do something with Casper, the dog that got hit. Also, I have been worried about Kingsley, who hasn't been eating his food regularly. He goes to the vet tonight, so maybe they will be able to shine some light on what is happening. On that sad note, I guess I don't have anything else to say about the past month or so. I promise, I post some pictures soon!
